EDGEartNOW 2006—16TH ANNUAL MIXED MEDIA SHOW
Statewide Mixed Media Competition to Exhibit at IAO
EdgeArtNow 2006 was the 16th annual mixed media exhibition of selected
works that will show in the IAO gallery from April 7-29, 2006. An opening
reception for the artists’ and awards presentation was held
Friday, April 7, 6-8 p.m.
Mixed media artist Michi Susan generously
provided $2,000 in awards for outstanding use of mixed media for this
exhibition. JRB Gallery sponsored the $100 prize for best work by
a person showing for the first time in this exhibition.
Chris Ramsey served as juror. Chris received a B.F.A. in Metals and Jewelry
Design at the University of Michigan in 1983 and a M.F.A. in Metals
and Jewelry Design at Texas Tech University in 1986. After one year
appointments at Oklahoma State University, University of Michigan,
University of Illinois and Purdue University, Chris rejoined the faculty
at O.S.U. in the fall of 1990.
"My energy and enthusiasm for making art begins outdoors as I travel gathering visual and physical elements of the environment. My observations and the found objects I collect provide a resource of information through which I can investigate ideas relating to my relationship with nature. The use of the found object serves as a metaphor for the cycle of erosion through which all life forms pass, including myself, the cycle of life to death to life."
Ramsey exhibits extensively and has received many awards for his
work.
This is the third year for the two categories of entries and exhibition, a mixed media competition and an installation competition. Mixed media is considered two or more very different media in one art piece. Working in two different painting media such as watercolor and oil does not constitute mixed media for this exhibition. Two and three-dimensional works that hang or are free standing qualify, and video and audio elements must be self-sustaining and function throughout the duration of the exhibition.
There was one $1,000 Michi Susan Award for Best of Show given
in this category. In the installation category, $1,000 was awarded
to the winner of this portion of the competition.
This competition
is for artists who reside in Oklahoma and reflects the mission of IAO
to sustain and encourage artists of all media in the state and particularly
those who are working in experimental and innovative media or subject
matter.
